The Johnson County Environmental Department protects you and
your environment through enforcement of regulations and standards for
minimizing, controlling, or eliminating sources of human disease and
environmental pollution.
The Sanitation Division programs include the permitting and inspection
of the construction of
on-site sewage treatment systems
and investigation of failed systems; plan review, inspection and complaint investigation of
food service establishments;
plan review, inspection and complaint investigations of public and semi-public
swimming pools; and other
environmental sanitation programs, including
rabies control.
The Laboratory Division provides
analytical services and consulting
to assure compliance of Johnson County owned and operated wastewater treatment plants and assure
compliance of industries discharging to County treatment plants. It also provides analytical
services to other County divisions and departments such as potable well water analysis, stormwater analysis,
and on-site sewage disposal discharge analysis.
The Pollution Control Division programs include permitting, inspecting and investigation of
industrial wastewater discharges,
grease management,
air pollution,
landfills, illegal dumping,
and other
environmental pollution complaints.
The Pollution Control Division operates the County's
Hazardous Materials Collection Facility
accepting unwanted hazardous chemicals from households at no charge and from small quantity
hazardous waste generators in the County for a fee.
The Radon Awareness Program
provides literature concerning health issues associated with radon and test kits are available for sale.
