To address the ongoing problems with wastewater system blockages and
backups from grease discharges, changes to the Johnson County Sewer Use
Code are effective starting January 1, 2003. The Code changes impose new grease
management requirements at food service establishments with an exterior grease interceptor
connected to the Johnson County Unified Wastewater Districts (JCUWD).

Code simply formalize existing requirements or practices and may not materially affect your
current operation. Other changes pertain only to new food service establishments and
do not affect existing facilities unless they are known to be causing a
grease-related wastewater problem. All food service facilities with an exterior grease interceptor
are required to obtain an annual grease interceptor operating permit
from the Environmental Department and to pay an annual operating permit
of $288.75. These are new requirements that can be found in Article 4, Part E
of the Code.
