What Can I Do With
|
|
Household chemicals can be legally disposed in the trash, but this type of disposal can cause health dangers to the folks processing your trash. All across the United States many communities now have collection programs, an alternative to dumping hazardous household chemicals in the trash. Johnson County's program opened in June, 1993. We take all types of household chemicals, but there are some other options for you, especially if you only have a little of the following to dispose of: Latex paint can go in the trash. If it is still liquid, solidify it with kitty litter or sawdust. We recycle good latex paint and encourage you to bring it to our facility if you have other materials too. Used motor oil can be recycled at many Jiffy Lube or Valvoline Instant Oil Change stores, and NAPA Auto Parts. Please call the store to confirm before you go. The Mid America Regional Council (MARC) maintains an up-to-date listing of local used oil collection sites. Antifreezeas well as many other household products can be disposed into the sanitary sewers (do not dispose into a septic tank system or the stormwater drain). Call for information if needed. Household alkaline batteries can be disposed in your household trash. Empty containers can go in your household trash. Solidified materials such as adhesives, caulk tubes, roof cement, glues and crack sealer can go in your household trash. Anything else? Bring them to the Philip J. Wittek Hazardous Materials Collection Facility for their safe disposal, recycling, or reuse! |
