Johnson County's Waste Collection Program
for Small Quantity Generators (SQG)

Businesses and organizations, such as churches, schools, government agencies, and non-profit groups, can utilize our small quantity hazardous waste (SQG) collection program. This is a voluntary program and is fee-based.

The program is open only to those groups generating small quantity hazardous waste in Johnson County, Kansas.

What is a Small Quantity Hazardous Waste Generator?

In Kansas, a Small Quantity Generator of hazardous waste is a facility (other than residents) that meets all of the following conditions:


  • The facility generates no more than 55 lbs. of hazardous waste, or no more than 2.2 lbs. of acutely hazardous waste in a calendar month.

  • The facility accumulates no more than 2,200 lbs. of hazardous waste, no more than 2.2 lbs. of acutely hazardous waste, or no more than 55 lbs. of debris and contaminated materials from the clean up of spillage of acutely hazardous waste.

Hazardous waste generated by a SQG facility can be disposed of through our business hazardous waste collection program (Fee based).

Motor oil is not considered hazardous waste as long as it is recycled for energy or material recovery. It is not included in the monthly generation rate calculation. Latex paint is not hazardous waste and is not included in the monthly rate calculation.

Lead acid batteries are not considered hazardous waste if recycled and are not included in the monthly rate calculation.

How Does My Facility Participate in the SQG Program?
1st: Take an inventory of all of the hazardous waste that you generate in a month to determine if you meet the Small Quantity Generator requirements.
2nd: Fill out an SQG Program application. Return the completed application and you will receive a response within two weeks along with further information and the current fee schedule.

Participants must be pre-registered prior to dropping off waste. Waste will be accepted by APPOINTMENT ONLY.
