Latex Paint Recycling Process

The can is opened and the paint is stirred.

Paint is separated into dark and light. It is poured into a 55-gallon drum through a coarse screen. The paint is then blended using a drum mixer.

Paint is decanted through a kitchen colander into 5-gallon pails. A swatch of the paint is put on top and each pail is numbered based on lot.

Many volunteers have helped make our paint recycling efforts successful. Folks from the Sierra Club, Audubon Society, Kansas City Outdoor Club, Johnson County Community College, Overland Park Environmental Advisory Committee, and Operation Brightside, are a few.

5-gallon buckets are labeled "Recycled Paint, for Exterior Use Only."

Re-blended latex paint is available to the public for exterior painting.
