Well Water Sampling

Many rural areas of Johnson County are still without public water service. On these properties drinking water primarily comes from private wells. Well water can be an acceptable form of obtaining drinking water.

However, some wells are inadequate and can present health hazards. High bacteria and nitrate levels are common in area wells and need to be properly treated. Johnson County provides a well water sampling program for rural residents concerned about the purity of their drinking water.

Application and Sampling Process

Place a phone call to JCED (913-715-6900) to discuss your concerns and the types of water samples you would like to have taken.

You will need to come into the Environmental Department to apply for the sample(s) and pay the fee. If you prefer to download the form and mail it to the office, it must be accompanied by the proper fee.

If you live in Johnson County, an inspector will call you to set up a time to take the sample from your home. If you live outside Johnson County, sample bottle(s) will be given to you at the time of application with instructions on how and when to take the samples.

Once the sample has been taken, it will be brought to the Environmental Lab for analysis. The results will be phoned, faxed, or mailed to the applicant as soon as possible.

If results are poor, the environmental health specialist will help you decide what steps are necessary to correct the problem.
