Contact the Animal Control Officers for the town
in which you live. The Animal Control Officers can assist you in
determining if the animal involved in a bite needs to be tested for rabies.
If the animal is to be tested for rabies, the
local Animal Control Officers or your Veterinarian will prepare the specimen for
shipping to Kansas State University for testing.
If you want to prepare the specimen for shipping
yourself, please follow these instructions:
- Remove the head from the body between the skull
and the first vertebrae. The exception is small animals (bats).
- Place the specimen in two plastic bags with the outer
bag being dark so that the specimen is not visible.
- The specimen should be frozen if it is to be stored for
any length of time.
- The specimens are shipped to K-State on Monday through
Thursday. Deliver the specimen to the JCED office before noon for
shipment on one of those days. If there is a need for other arrangements,
please contact the office at 913-715-6900.
- Call Kyle Schuman at 715-6928 or Jack Maybee at 715-6903.
Copies of the results will be mailed to the victim of the
bite and to the person who submitted the specimen for testing.
For all specimens not submitted by an Animal Control
Officer or a veterinarian, payment of $65.00 will be required at the time the specimen is
submitted.
