Groundwater Wells
Johnson County Landfill

A drilling rig is used to drill a well into the groundwater at various depths and locations around the perimeter of a landfill.

Groundwater well construction consists of installing piping into the groundwater and then mixing a grout compound to seal off the rock and shale formations above the groundwater table. The piping is usually PVC but can be stainless steel.

Groundwater wells are sampled at least twice per year.  The well samples are analyzed at a certified lab and reviewed by state and county officials to determine whether the landfill is contaminating groundwater.
