Since June 2005, a number of residents and businesses located near the
APAC/Reno Construction & Demolition Landfill at 167th and Metcalf have
been complaining about odors emanating from the landfill. The odors
which smell like "rotten eggs" are caused by hydrogen sulfide emissions
that can occur when large quantities of drywall disposed in the landfill
get wet. The Johnson County Environmental Department (JCED) and the
Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) have been working
with the landfill to abate the hydrogen sulfide odors. KDHE has directed
the landfill to take a number of actions intended to eliminate the
odors. JCED has also been monitoring the hydrogen sulfide levels at the
landfill boundary. KDHE and JCED have requested that the Agency for
Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) review the existing
monitoring data and recommend whether additional assessment is needed to
determine the health impacts of the hydrogen sulfide emissions on nearby
residents and businesses. ATSDR is an arm of the federal Centers for
Disease Control which is part of the Department of Health and Human
Services.
On September 19, 2005, KDHE and JCED held a public meeting to update
the residents and businesses about efforts to eliminate the odor
problems and to field questions from the public about their concerns.
ATSDR also provided general information about the health impacts of
exposure to hydrogen sulfide emissions.
In order to provide continuous access to updated information
concerning the odors, JCED will post information as it becomes available
on this website. Currently, the three presentations made at the
September 19 public meeting are posted, along with additional
information about hydrogen sulfide provided by ATSDR and a summary of the
question and answers from the public meeting.
If you cannot find the answer to your question here or want to share
your concern about the odors, you may contact JCED
by email
or by phone at 913-715-6900; or you may also contact
KDHE by email
