Summer Update on Recent Activities at APAC-Reno

June 2007
No odor complaints received by APAC, Johnson County or KDHE.
  1. No detectable readings at the ambient air monitors.

  2. Average landfill gas concentration in June:  Methane 12.7%; hydrogen sulfide 37 parts per million (ppm).

  3. An estimated 1,944,000 cubic feet of landfill gas was removed and treated in June.

  4. An estimated 2,817,391 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and 210,679 gallons of well water (installed in April, 2007 in the southwest corner of landfill) were removed and treated in June.

July 2007
No odor complaints received by APAC, Johnson County or KDHE.
  1. No detectable readings at the ambient air monitors.

  2. Heavy rains at the end of June and beginning of July amounted to more than 10 inches at the APAC site causing high water at the lower pond.  The telemetry system at the West Seep location was impacted by water.  The hydrogen sulfide monitor was cleaned and checked and continued to log data. The telemetry system that transmits data from the monitor to the safety building was removed, rebuilt, and reinstalled. During the time that the system was being rebuilt the remaining seven monitors and two telemetry systems continued to operate properly. The monitor at the West Seep was checked regularly by Stinson Environmental Group personnel and no hydrogen sulfide was recorded.

  3. Average landfill gas concentration in July: Methane 35.5%; hydrogen sulfide 35-40 parts per million (ppm).

  4. An estimated 2,008,800 cubic feet of landfill gas was removed and treated in July.

  5. An estimated 2,688,000 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and 188,866 gallons of well water (installed in April, 2007 in the southwest corner of landfill) were removed and treated in July.

  6. Comments received from KDHE on permit application, response submitted August 1st.

August 2007
  1. Between August 16th and 28th, during the moving of a compost pile located near the southern property line, hydrogen sulfide released during this activity was detected at the perimeter monitors.  The peak reading was 0.3 ppm at the southeast monitor between 10:30 am and 11:00 am on August 20th. The next highest reading was 0.12 ppm at the same monitor detected between 8:00 am and 8:30 am on August 16th.  Additional readings from 0.01 to 0.1 ppm were detected at the north, northeast, east and southeast monitors on 8/16, 8/20, 8/21, 8/23, 8/27 and 8/28.

  2. Average landfill gas concentration in August: Methane 37.5%; hydrogen sulfide 35-40 parts per million (ppm).

  3. An estimated 2,008,800 cubic feet of landfill gas was removed and treated in August.

  4. An estimated 3,501,051 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and well water were removed and treated in August.

September 2007
  1. No odor complaint received by KDHE, JCED or APAC-Reno. No detectable readings of hydrogen sulfide on the monitors.

  2. An estimated 1,944,000 cubic feet of landfill gas was removed and treated in September.

  3. An estimated 3.444,218 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and well water were removed and treated in September.
