Update on Recent Activities at APAC-Reno

End of 2006 Status Summary

Odor control, gas recovery, and removal of contact water (water that has seeped down through the landfill and collected underneath) continued throughout 2006 without incident. APAC-Reno initiated discussions with the Johnson County Wastewater Department to assess the treatability of the contact water through one of their wastewater treatment plants. Tentative plans are to start those tests by mid-March, 2007.

The Johnson County Environmental Department (JCED) continues to download the data from the air monitoring network every two weeks. No detectable readings of hydrogen sulfide have been recorded.

The gas treatment system has continued operating without incident. A maintenance shutdown is planned for February, 2007. In anticipation of this event, APAC-Reno updated their Operation and Maintenance Plan to include protocol for notification, monitoring, and reporting during the maintenance shutdown and submitted it to KDHE and JCED in January, 2007.

The air monitoring system telemetry system has undergone several modifications to improve the efficiency and reduce power consumption.

The hydrogen sulfide destruction system efficiency has been measured greater than 99% which puts it in compliance with their Air Permit.

APAC-Reno’s water treatment system which utilizes hydrogen peroxide to destroy the hydrogen sulfide continues to operate very effectively.

Groundwater field work was performed in August, 2006 and the Phase II hydrogeologic investigation report was submitted to KDHE in September 29, 2006. APAC-Reno met with KDHE in November, 2006 to discuss the report. An additional monitoring well was installed east of the lower pond in January. To date, 9 monitoring wells have been installed outside the landfill area and 7 have been installed within the landfill area.

ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry) performed a hydrogen sulfide evaluation of nearby neighborhoods in 2006 and found there to be no apparent health risk based on their air sampling. A final report is anticipated to be out sometime in 2007.
