Week ending March 18, 2006
The landfill gas collection and treatment system began operation on
Monday, 3/13/06. The landfill gas (methane and hydrogen sulfide) is
being collected and pumped to a hot oil heat transfer burner supporting
the asphalt plant. The landfill gas is being used as the sole fuel for
this burner and the system is working well. APAC-Reno personnel are
operating the system and have been monitoring individual gas wells to
optimize the system performance. No noticeable odors have occurred this
week during system operation. The 5 hp blower unit for the gas
collection system was measured for a noise level and found to be at
about 80 decibels. APAC will be installing housing over the blower unit
as agreed upon.
The contact water collection and treatment continues with the west
and south seeps continuing to flow at 15 gallons per minute each. Work
on a revised water discharge permit for contact water discharge
continues between APAC-Reno and the Kansas Department of Health and
Environment - Bureau of Water.
The air monitoring for hydrogen sulfide gas continues with
downloading data from the perimeter air monitors by Environmental
Department staff. Log data shows only one odor reading of 10 parts per
billion for the week on the southeast meter. The interior source meters
for the air monitoring telemetry system are on line for two units with
the third monitor to be on line within a few weeks.
