Week ending March 3, 2006
The landfill gas collection and treatment piping system has been
installed. H2S odors noticed along 167th street due to the piping
excavation have dissipated. The blower for the gas collection system and
the burner installation is being scheduled for installation 3/9/06.
The contact water collection and treatment continue with the west and
south seeps flowing at 15 gpm each into the lower east pond. The color
of the contact water from the south landfill area has been improving.
Treatment in the lower east pond continues with sodium hydroxide and
treatment in the seeps with hydrogen peroxide. APAC and their consultant
are considering connecting a sediment filter and holding tank to the
pipes moving the seep water to the ponds. This would allow more time for
the oxygen to be released into the water from the hydrogen peroxide to
take place prior to entering the lower pond. This could help reduce or
eliminate the need for sodium hydroxide in the lower pond but monitoring
will be done for water quality and hydrogen peroxide will be added as
needed. The upper northwest pond will have a biological treatment system
installed during March.
APAC and the their consultant continue to work with the KDHE-Bureau
of Water on water quality parameters related to a new water discharge
permit for discharging treated contact water.
The air monitoring program continues to show very low to no
detections of H2S gas at the perimeter and the source area. The last
round of air sampling of perimeter monitors showed 0 ppb at all five
meters. The telemetry equipment for the alarm system of the three source
meters inside the landfill is expected to be installed on 3/7/06.
