Update on Recent Activities at APAC-Reno
Week ending May 19, 2006
- Landfill Gas Collection and Treatment
– The landfill
gas has essentially been burning continuously since the system was
started up. Air testing for the air permit modification was completed
on May 18. Initial results show the hydrogen sulfide to be 150 ppm at
the blower and about 1ppm or less at the exhaust stack.
Contact Water Collection and Treatment
– two tanks
are being installed to provide mixing and residence time for water
treatment with hydrogen peroxide. APAC is conducting bench scale
testing with enzymes and catalyst to evaluate other treatment options.
A catalyst is being used on the upper pond to improve the biological
oxygen demand (BOD). Sulfides in the contact water continue to
decrease. The west seep has decreased from 126 mg/L on March 7, to
99.8 mg/L on April 7, and to 56.8 mg/L on May 15. The south seep has
gone from 12 mg/L on February 24 to 3.8 mg/L on May 15.
Air Monitoring –
On April 26 a pipe containing contact water broke following a heavy
rain. The telemetry system sent out an alarm, and the pipe was fixed.
The perimeter air monitors continue to show no H2S detections since
March 8th.
Hydrogeology –
APAC responded to KDHE comments in the Site Hydrogeology Report.
Ground water wells were sampled in May with select wells being
monitored for water level only. A Phase II ground water assessment
will be conducted to address KDHE comments. No impacts to perimeter
wells have been discovered.
