Update on Recent Activities at APAC-Reno
Week ending June 10, 2006
- Landfill Gas Collection and Treatment – The landfill gas continues to burn around
the clock. Air testing for the air permit modification was completed
on May 18. Initial results showed the hydrogen sulfide to be 150 ppm
at the blower and about 1ppm or less at the exhaust stack.
Preliminary data review and calculations indicate the testing data
should be in compliance with KDHE for the air permit modification.
- Contact Water Collection and Treatment – Two tanks were installed the week of
May 22 to provide mixing and residence time for water treatment.
- Air Monitoring – On May 23, 1 ppm H2S was detected at the meter
on the catwalk at the east pond. On May 26, 1 ppm H2S was detected at the
seep south of the east pond. These readings occurred when the water
treatment tanks were being put into use. No H2S has been detected on
the perimeter monitors since a 0.01 ppm reading at the southeast
monitor on March 8. There was a power failure at the safety building
on May 31. It took several days to get all aspects of the system
fully functional. Additional precautions were taken until the system
was fully operational.
- Hydrogeology – Work Plan for the second phase of groundwater investigation
has been prepared and submitted to the KDHE along with the mid-year groundwater
monitoring results. The groundwater monitoring continues to show
dropping water levels throughout the landfill.
