Second Half Update on Recent Activities at APAC-Reno

July 2008
  1. No hydrogen sulfide readings were detected by any of the monitors.

  2. An estimated 2,008,800 cubic feet of landfill gas removed and treated in July

  3. An estimated gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and well water were removed and treated in July.

  4. Six gas probes were installed along the east boundary. No methane or hydrogen sulfide gases were detected.

August 2008
  1. One hydrogen sulfide reading of 0.02 part per million was detected at 4:06 pm on August 5, 2008.

  2. An estimated 1,944,000 cubic feet of landfill gas removed and treated in August.

  3. An estimated 3,500,879 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and well water were removed and treated in August.

September 2008
  1. No hydrogen sulfide detections by any of the air monitors.

  2. An estimated 1,944,000 cubic feet of landfill gas removed and treated in September.

  3. An estimated 2,228,312 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and well water were removed and treated in September.

October 2008
  1. No hydrogen sulfide detections by any of the air monitors.

  2. An estimated 2,008,800 cubic feet of landfill gas removed and treated in October.

  3. An estimated 3,103,084 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and well water were removed and treated in October.

  4. On October 30th, the north perimeter monitor had a reading of 0.01 ppm H2S at 7:10 am and the southeast monitor had several readings of 0.01 ppm H2S between 1:45 am and 3:15 am.

  5. Methane monitoring on-site and along Metcalf Ave continues with no detectable measurements.

November 2008
  1. In November hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was detected on seven days. The north, northeast and southeast perimeter monitors detected H2S at a concentration of 0.01ppm and one instance of 0.02ppm. Up until November 19 the 10,000 gallon well water storage tank was plumbed directly to the lower pond with hydrogen peroxide added at the well head. It is believed that given the increase in H2S in the landfill that retention time had become insufficient thus contributing to the H2S readings at the air monitors. The storage tank discharge was connected to the smaller mixing tanks thus increasing retention time on November 19.  No H2S has been detected since that time.

  2. An estimated 1,944,000 cubic feet of landfill gas removed and treated in November.

  3. An estimated 2,550,315 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and well water were removed and treated in November.

  4. Methane gas was detected in a gas monitoring well near the southeast border of the property. The gas collection system was rebalanced to pull more gas from the perimeter wells. Since the rebalancing, methane has not been detected in the gas monitoring well. However, there has been an increase in the methane and H2S concentration of the landfill gas at the blower. These levels are acceptable under the existing air permit. APAC is modifying the gas collection system to burn more landfill gas. This modification will be submitted to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment in December for approval.

December 2008
  1. No hydrogen sulfide detected at air monitors.

  2. An estimated 2,008,800 cubic feet of landfill gas removed and treated in December.

  3. An estimated 1,574,634 gallons of contact water (water that has seeped through the landfill and accumulated underneath the landfill) and well water were removed and treated in December.
