Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to have my home pool licensed?
No. The only pools that are inspected and licensed are commercial swimming pools. Commercial swimming pools include hotels, health clubs, city and subdivision pools.

In what cities is the Johnson County Environmental Sanitary Code enforced?
The Johnson County Sanitary Code is enforced in Leawood, Lenexa, Merriam, Mission, Olathe, Prairie Village, Shawnee, Spring Hill, and unincorporated Johnson County.

Why aren't Overland Park pool inspection results available on the website?
The city of Overland Park has not passed the Johnson County Environmental Sanitary Code and completes their own inspections. Contact Overland Park for information regarding their swimming pool inspection program.

What chemicals are tested during a pool inspection?
The free chlorine and pH. These are the chemicals that have a direct effect on public health.

What is the most important thing in preventing disease when swimming with small children?
Make sure that small children wear a swim diaper when swimming. This protects them and others from possible fecal contamination.

What are the reasons that the Johnson County Environmental Department will close my subdivision swimming pool?
Your subdivision swimming pool would be closed for one or more of the following reasons:

  • The Chlorine and/or pH level is too high or low. If these levels are not in the correct range it can have an effect on health, such as eye irritation or burning.
  • The main drain of the pool is not visible due to cloudiness of the water. It is important to be able to see people swimming at the bottom of the pool.
  • There is a safety concern regarding the pool equipment.

What does my subdivision pool need to open for the year?
Every year the swimming pool has to obtain a permit from JCED to operate the swimming pool. In addition, the facility has to be under the supervision of a licensed pool operator. The pool operator license is valid for three years.

What if my question is not listed here?
